About Tourism Resource Consultants

TRC’s Credentials

New Zealand’s priceless heritage of protected areas, mountains, forests, scenic lakes, beaches, cultural landscapes, and historic places are the basis of its tourism industry. These resources underpin the country’s reputation as a premier outdoor recreation and adventure destination. For decades, New Zealand has been managing and developing tourism associated with its natural and cultural resources, finding practical solutions to the challenges and complexities this presents.

Since it was established in 1986, Tourism Resource Consultants (TRC) has adapted New Zealand’s experience in this field to a range of specialist consulting services. From its beginning TRC has specialised at the interface of tourism and conservation, holding to an ideal of responsible tourism operating in harmony with environmental, cultural and social objectives. In the late 1980s, the term ‘ecotourism’ was invented to describe this field. Recently, in line with the global focus on poverty, TRC’s projects in the Asia Pacific region have helped pioneer the careful use of ecotourism as a tool for development and social change.

TRC’s international networks of clients, contacts and associates span all aspects of public and private sector involvement in tourism, resource management and development. TRC’s pragmatic problem-solving, partnership-fostering approach has won major awards and praise from a wide range of clients throughout the Asia Pacific region and beyond. Despite its expansion over the years, TRC remains as a specialist consulting firm offering individually tailored services to its clients.

TRC’s Team

TRC is based in Wellington, New Zealand. Over the years, satellite offices have been established in places such as Kota Kinabalu, Kathmandu, Kuching, Mataram, and Manila. TRC is privately owned. The firm was founded in 1986 and there are three company directors, Les Clark, Dave Bamford and Ross Corbett. They lead a core team of full time professional staff who are routinely joined by a select group of regular associates. These associates are specialist consultants with a track record in their field who choose to be associated with TRC for their consulting work.

TRC is proud to have this strong, consistent base of expertise on which to draw. The cooperative atmosphere amongst TRC’s regular associates not only strengthens the firm but also contributes to the positive and creative environment that TRC likes to develop in its teams and with project stakeholders. Clients are included as part of the team where possible. Project teams mobilised by TRC have a reputation for straightforward professionalism and integrated results.

TRC’s Clients

TRC’s clients are from the private and public sectors of tourism, resource management and planning agencies, conservation agencies, and development organisations ranging from development banks to NGOs. The common thread is that they are people concerned about managing resources associated with tourism and outdoor recreation, improving government systems, creating facilities and attractions, marketing products, helping communities to develop, or in other ways striving for a sustainable future involving visitors in natural and cultural settings.
